Paläkastro, 19 km from Sitia, an originally typical, quiet farming village has grown and become livelier in recent years, but has not lost its village character. From here you can go on excursions in many directions, e.g. to the beautiful beaches of Chiona and Kouremenos, which are also good for surfing. Both beaches have also been awarded a blue European flag. About 1 km from Paleokastro is the small traditional village of Agathia, whose pretty cross-domed church with the light blue roof is visible from afar. Other worthwhile excursion destinations are Itanos, the small edition of Vai with white sand and slender palm trees, the Toplou monastery, and the excavation site of the Minoan palace of Kato Zakros.
There are also many opportunities for hikers here. There are several gorges in the area. The famous gorge, the “Valley of the Dead”, leads through huge oleander bushes and slopes strewn with oregano into a fertile, sheltered, almost subtropical valley. 8 km from Paläkastro is Vai, the well-known palm beach, which has been awarded a blue European flag. High date palms and a wonderful beach with fine sand gravel invite you to take a bath. The entire palm oasis is under nature protection, only the front palm trees and the beautiful beach may be used. Our houses and villas in the area of Paläkastro offer you the opportunity to get to know the typical Cretan way of life.
The bay of “Kouremenos” has perfect shallow water, ideal for beginners and experts. The bay of Kouremenos has very impressive wind statistics and the wind is similar to Karpathos with app. 1 Beaufort less. From May to October the wind blows almost every day. Palekastro is a meltemi spot and due to the local heat and funnel effect, the wind is stronger. Palekastro could be the windiest place on earth between May and October. It is a windsurfing paradise and a top place for windsurfing in Greece There are also 2 spots ideal for waves near the station.
Our station, the “Freak” windsurf station is almost in the middle of Kouremenos Bay. The “Palekastro” spot is one of the most wind-safe areas in the Mediterranean.
